Affectionate Friends Mural Fragment: Appearing to be an excavated portion of a wall fresco, this original sculpted mural fragment is carved from rigid substrate and painted in the fresco secco manner, measuring 5/8" x 17" x 23". George was interested in the skin tones and play of light on the expressions of the two women. The uplifted face is directly lit while the downward looking face is basking in warm reflected light. Although live models were used during the creation of the work, the poses are derived from two figures of Canova's The Three Graces.
