Lynne Rutter Murals and Decorative Painting

With over 25 years of experience as a professional decorative painter, Lynne Rutter is widely recognized as a fine art muralist and expert decorative artist with an excellent eye for color. Her work is both figurative and ornamental, and is inspired and informed by her travels abroad, grand period interiors, and the patterns and textures of anything beautiful she encounters.

Lynne's lifelong interest in period design led her to work on a large number of historic buildings and she has participated in the restoration of the painted ornament in churches and civic buildings, as well a number of Victorians and period revival homes. She designs and produces murals and ornament for newer architecture, always with the goal to bring out its best features. Adorning a previously barren space with historic-inspired ornament has become one of Lynne Rutter's signature looks.

Lynne studied architecture and design at the University of California at Berkeley, graduating with a degree in fine art. She furthered her training by working as a scenic artist; apprenticing with some of the leading decorative painters in the country; and spent four years as paint artisan and manager for a prominent mural studio, where she coordinated the production of large scale commercial mural work for national and international installations. In 1990, she founded her own boutique atelier, with a mission to create "custom fine art murals, and super-fussy ornament, the kind you have to do by hand, and that you want to look at up-close." Her studio produces murals, trompe l'oeil, chinoiserie, cloudscapes, gilding, painted ornament, faux and decorative finishes.

You can see more of Lynne's work at her website and on her blog "The Ornamentalist" where she writes about the finer points of ornamental painting.
