interior and building design
At the rear of the Marsh House two new additions have been constructed. On the left, a new conservatory replaces a ramshackle closed-in porch that had been added to the west side without any concern for appropriate style. Its condition was beyond repair and the decision was made to remove the addition and replace it with a coherent structure that uses architectural ideas from the existing front porch. At the south side of the building, facing beautiful views of forest and sky, an Italian Renaissance pavilion has been constructed. Palladian architectural motifs inspired a Classical revival structure that blends harmoniously with the original Italianate building without copying its design. The plaster scroll brackets at the eaves and the plaster ornaments in the tympanum were cast by Lorna Kollmeyer.
The addition masks an ungainly modern chimney added to the outside of the original building in the 1960's that the owners wished to retain, but which needed to be disguised. The nearly completed exterior still needs stone facing installed at the foundation and cast stone treads and risers at the unfinished stairs. The design of the interior is still in progress and it is planned that eventually the pavilion will serve as a dining room for large gatherings, as well as a place to sit and enjoy the view.
