antique furniture conservation and restoration

I do many things within the realms of antique furniture/decorative art conservation and restoration. My specialties include American and Eurpoean18th and 19th century period gilded frames and furniture, painted furniture, architectural gilding, Chinese lacquer screens and Japanning. Typical treatment on most pieces includes structural repairs, gilding conservation, compo and traditional wood carving of missing elements. Colors and patinas are matched to existing finishes using natural earth pigments and any other methods/materials that the original artist had intended. Historic hand rubbed finishes such as shellac and special wax coatings are time-honored techniques that I often use. 100% non-toxic, historic paints such as milk paint, distemper and egg tempera are also part of my permanent palette. These are all key elements to period restoration. At the same time, the materials that are used on antiques can easily be used to create special custom finishes for 20th century furniture. The artisan techniques always add a visual depth that is unique. I enjoy mixing it up so that the work is always exciting, challenging and different.
