Riley Doty — Doty Tile
Doty Tile has been installing ceramic tilework in the Bay Area since 1979. For over twenty years Doty Tile operated as a small custom tile company. Today Riley runs a one-person operation, but frequently collaborates on projects with Phylece Snyder, a longtime colleague and wonderful tile setter.
Doty Tile does careful, thoughtful work on various types of installations. Three areas of special focus are: historic restoration projects, working with handmade tiles, and doing public art installations. A further specialty involves certain challenges of a functional nature: designing installations so as to prevent damage from structural stress and/or water incursion - and also dealing after the fact with historic tilework which has suffered from the effects of either or both of these twin nemeses. When working with historic installations the goal is to remove/repair/redesign/reinstall as needed so that the restored work will look as nearly as possible the way the original work was intended to.
Riley is actively involved with the Tile Heritage Foundation and does considerable research about the history of tiles and tilework.
