Adrian Card
harpsichord painter and historically-based decorative painting
No matter how many times antique harpsichords were redecorated, the soundboard paintings were never touched. I was able to recreate this soundboard painting (the original dates from 1624) from photos taken at the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar, France. All of the pigments used are the same ones that would have been used at the time, e.g. lead white, genuine vermilion, etc. Visible at the top of the photo are the block-printed papers which were also used in the 17th century. I carve and print the blocks myself and the designs are also of the period.
