Adrian Card
harpsichord painter and historically-based decorative painting
The musical components of this Flemish-style instrument are a copy of the 1624 “Colmar Ruckers” harpsichord by Johannes Ruckers (the Stradivarius of harpsichords). The decoration of the case and the lid painting are completely original. The scrolling design for the case was inspired by early 17th century German silver work, and the landscape for the lid was composed from a list of elements the client wished to see in the painting.
The soundboard painting (see next thumbnail) is a faithful copy of the original (now at the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar, France), and the keywell is lined with hand-printed papers, pulled from blocks that I carved (also visible in the next thumbnail).
