Peter Bridgman Wallcovering
wallpaper and wallcovering installation
We are very saddened by the loss of our master wallcovering expert and dear friend, Peter Bridgman, who died from cancer September 2010 in his home in Oakland, CA. Peter was an active, integral part of our guild and will be greatly missed
Peter Bridgman has been a wallpaper and painting contractor in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 30 years. His diverse skills range from hanging conventional papers to installing more specialized wallcovering treatments, such as gold leaf papers, embossed Lincrusta and Anaglypta, and fabric-upholstered walls. He has particular expertise in the hanging of intricate wallpapered ceiling designs, and in the installation of canvas murals.
Peter has been hanging Bradbury & Bradbury Art Wallpapers since 1983, and has installed over 450 ornamental ceilings that were designed with their hand-printed papers. Through creating these unique environments, Peter's work has developed a period-style focus for both Victorian and Arts and Crafts residences. In addition to papered walls and ceilings, many of Peter's projects also feature his creatively painted accents on moldings, rosettes, and other decorative plasterwork.
Through his extensive experience installing both canvas murals and canvas liners on walls, Peter has developed techniques for hanging ceilings (which are composed of multiple panels), installed without separations occurring between the panels.
His skills have taken him to projects throughout California, and to more than twenty states from Alaska to Florida. His work was featured on the PBS series “This Old House,” for the restoration of an 1886 Victorian home in Savannah, Georgia in which Peter installed wallpaper in five of its rooms. His work has appeared in numerous national periodicals, including Victorian Interiors, The New York Times and Architectural Digest, and has also been published in many books on Victorian and Arts and Crafts interiors.
